What time of day is TSA security fastest?

TSA lines are typically shortest before 6 AM and after 8 PM. The busiest times are 7-10 AM and 5-7 PM at most airports.

Should I arrive 2 hours early for domestic flights?

For most domestic flights, 90 minutes is enough if you have TSA PreCheck or Clear. Without either, 2 hours is a safe buffer at large airports, especially during peak morning hours (7-9 AM) and holiday weekends. At smaller airports, 60-90 minutes is usually sufficient.

What ID do I need at the TSA checkpoint?

You can use a state ID or driver's license, passport, passport card, Global Entry card, military ID (CAC), TWIC, or green card. Expired IDs are accepted up to one year past their expiration date. Canadian IDs are also accepted.

I lost my ID — can I still fly?

Yes, but show up 3 hours early. Bring any two of: Social Security card, birth certificate, mail with your name, prescription bottles with your name, school or work ID, an older expired ID, or even a Costco card. If you have nothing, TSA will attempt to verify your identity through their call center (IVCC), which takes 30-60 minutes. If they can't verify you, you won't fly that day.

My name on my ticket doesn't match my ID — will that be a problem?

Yes. The name on your boarding pass must match the name on your ID exactly. Even one letter off can send you back to the ticketing counter. Double-check before you get in line.

Does TSA check my arrest record when they scan my ID?

No. TSA's ID scanners only verify that you have a flight booked and that your ID matches your boarding pass. They don't pull up criminal records or any other personal information.

Why didn't my TSA PreCheck show up?

The most common reason is that your Known Traveler Number (KTN) wasn't added to your booking. Have the ticketing agent add it, then wait 5-10 minutes for it to update in TSA's system. Also, PreCheck isn't guaranteed every time — there's always a small chance you won't get it for a particular trip.

Can I bring protein powder through security?

Yes. It may get additional screening, but it's allowed. TSA sees it constantly.

Why do I keep getting a pat-down?

When the body scanner triggers an alarm, officers have to resolve it before you can continue. Some people consistently trigger alarms due to medical devices, clothing, or body type. If it happens every time, try removing bulky items from pockets and wearing simpler clothing through the checkpoint.

Why does my bag keep getting searched?

Something in the bag is catching the X-ray operator's eye. If a specific item keeps getting flagged, take it out and send it through separately so officers can see it clearly and clear it faster.

Will a temporary ID work at TSA?

Sometimes, but don't rely on it alone. Bring the temporary ID, your expired ID (if it's within one year of expiration it still works), and one backup document like a birth certificate or Social Security card. Show up early — you'll get additional screening.

My ID has a hole punched in it — is that a problem?

Only if the ID is expired more than one year. The hole punch itself isn't an issue.
